November 18, 2010 - Maintenance & New Tires

As you can see, my tires are getting a little worn on the inside.   This weekend was a good time to do it.  No flying events and it was reasonably warm.  Better to do it now than when it gets cold.

I bought that specialty RV jacking device halfway through the building project -- so long ago I can't even remember when -- and now I'm finally using it.  Works like a champ!  I never liked the idea of putting a jack-lift under the wing.  I much prefer this way.  Although I was very nervous about lifting the plane.  There's always the nightmare of the plane falling off the jack ...

I changed the oil prior to working on the wheels.

I couldn't believe how many posts there were on Vans Air Force about what brand of tires to buy.  I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it.  I just went to the Pilot Store at Clearview Airport and bought what they  had.  Air Hawks I think.  Support your local airport!

No doubt the tires need replacing.    I have about 300 hours on these tires -- don't know if they lasted as long as they should have or not.

It took me more than a few hours to do the entire job:  I had to get the wheel off, take the wheel apart, spinkle baby powder into the new tire, pack the wheel bearings with fresh grease, put the new tube in the new tire, bolt the wheel back together, put the wheel back on the plane, then put the wheel pants back on.

I also did some maintenance on the tailwheel, greasing the various parts.  Believe me, the tailwheel will let you know when you have neglected it.  It makes funny noises or the plane doesn't ground handle very well.
